Where to begin. The Dogs started off as a joke band of sorts, yelling and screaming in the basements and bedrooms of childhood. Pete and James, neighbors and bff’s from birth, recorded their first album in second grade. Matt teamed up with the duo in their middle school years to form The Dogs. Fast-forward to Summer 2008; Rivkah joined the group and The Dogs recorded their first proper album, The Dogs. Which brings us to Free Write…
Most of the songs for Free Write were conceptualized while the band’s members were attending their sophomore year of college at various schools across the country. In the summer of 2009, they reconvened in Chicago and set about distilling songs and ideas for what would become Free Write. Throughout the summer of 2009, Free Write received hundreds of hours of recording time in basements, living rooms, and Frat row tennis courts. Drawing upon diverse influences, the Dogs strove to write an album that would do Neil Young proud.
Lyrically, the latest album has been a journey into the spontaneous. Over the summer they would think of lyrics by free writing, essentially, writing for 10 minutes and seeing what ended up on the page. Most of them had an eerie, rhythmic, poetic nonsensicality about them. From these free writes they would take lyrics and song ideas.
The Dogs have held a common love for the loud, the intimate, and energetic. Their latest album, Free Write, follows in a direct line of succession, a series of experiments into the sound that has become The Dogs.
